GIS Field Representative / Is it right for you?

As a GIS field representative you work in and around your home address – usually covering an area of several zip codes to one or more counties. You observe, measure, and photograph. You provide objective information about the risk you inspect. You are the eyes and ears of the insurance underwriter or agent who pays us. You answer questions on our data entry form and upload the data and photos to our QA department via the internet on our website. You drive to the properties and, in some cases, set appointments to inspect inside. The pay is piece rate with fees varying depending upon the work effort required. The job offers a lot of freedom with no time clocks or direct supervision. For this reason, frankly, this job is not for everyone. Rather than waste your time (and ours), here are some Pros & Cons to help you decide if this is for you.

Pros Cons
Free to work at your own speed You get paid for what you actually do – not hourly. Also, there are deadlines for getting the inspections done – usually 20 days.
You get to do a lot of driving getting to the address of buildings to be inspected. Great if you like to drive. Wear and tear on your car plus gasoline.
Earn from $20 to $4,000 per month. A typical GIS field rep. works part time and earns $500 to $2,000 per month. Earnings depend upon how many inspections you perform. Your earnings depend upon how hard and efficiently you work and the amount of work available in your territory.
With your status of Independent Contractor, you are running your own company. You can deduct business expenses and even work for our competitors making inspections for them. As an Independent Contractor, you are not an “employee” of GIS. We will not be withholding taxes from your check. You are not covered under our insurance (such as Workers Comp.)
You get a lot of fresh air and exercise. You are in and out of your car, climbing steps and walking around properties.
